Jazz at Senior Division

For campers in Grades 7 & 8, we offer an Intermediate Jazz programme, which allows them to be part of our well-known Senior Jazz programme, while developing skills right, from the ground up. They are full participants in the jazz programme, with extra assistance as needed.

Campers can move smoothly from our Junior Jazz programme at Junior Division into this programme.

They can also attend both weeks— our Junior Jazz programme and the Intermediate Jazz programme, thus giving them two outstanding weeks and even stronger skill development.

Instrumentation:

• saxophones (alto, tenor, baritone)
• trumpet
• trombone
• rhythm (piano, guitar, bass, drums)

All rhythm campers and vocal jazz campers participate in the Mandatory Rental Program (MRP), which provides keyboard, drum kits, mics and amps.

Senior Jazz (Gr. 8-12 students)

Our Senior Jazz programme challenges campers of all levels to improve their chart reading skills, improvisation ability and to extend their knowledge of jazz fundamentals, while playing in a big band or jazz workshop and combos.

Five hours of classes a day, led by some of Canada’s best jazz professionals, and a nightly “up close and personal” jazz concert make an inspiring week.

Each camper’s individualized timetable is based on their ability on their instrument, knowledge of jazz fundamentals and ability to improvise. On the first afternoon of camp, faculty will hear each camper. They will also undergo a short jazz fundamentals test to determine their class.

They have classes in Big Band or Workshop, Jazz Fundamentals, Sectionals and Group Lessons on their instrument, all taught by some of Canada’s top jazz musicians, and supported by Music Staff who are students in Canada’s demanding University and College Jazz programmes.
