It's not just about the Job

We're Investing in YOUR future

So much of this job happens between the lines of the job description. While you are a cabin counsellor and you help the faculty, there’s so much more for you on staff at National Music Camp.

If you are in Music Education, NMC is the perfect place for you.

  • work with a different director each week and each year you work at NMC
  • get lessons and help preparing for auditions from faculty specialists
  • work on your teaching skills in small groups and get help from faculty
  • got secondary instruments? At Junior camp, you are expected to be able to help out on any of them. Some staff work exclusively with campers on a secondary instrument.

Performance majors also need to know how to teach in their private studios. NMC gives you a chance to try things out and have faculty support.

In addition to all the music teaching opportunities, NMC is a great place to meet people from other university programmes. The people you meet at NMC often become lifelong friends.

Once or twice each camp we offer an Education Seminar. These popular evening sessions, offered by faculty on topics of interest to music education and performance students, give participants insights and direct contact.

Every year is different, but here are some of the topics we’ve offered in recent years:

  • Interviewing Skills
  • Strings for non-string players, Winds for non-wind players, Brass for non-brass players
  • Classroom Management Tools
  • Setting up a Teaching Studio
  • Hints for Successful Freelancing
  • Current “IT” topics in Education
  • Percussion Intro for non-percussion majors
  • Conducting Skills
  • Beginning Jazz Improvisation for Classically-trained
  • Starting a Music Theatre programme
