For decades now, the Music Staff at NMC have been helping kids create music. Lifelong friends are met here by staff, faculty and campers, so much so that just about wherever you go these days, you’ll find someone who has been to camp. ( Try it... ask someone if they know about NMC!)

As staff members you are on the frontline... in the cabins, in the rehearsals, at meals... watching young musicians grow musically and personally. The memories you create at camp will stay with you. Since many of our staff go on to become teachers in some form, the skills they develop at camp help indescribably in the classroom.

While we especially love having staff who have lots of kid and camp related experience, we do hire staff who are just getting involved with working with kids and offer lots of support before and at camp.

In addition, NMC offers Music staff some things that you just don’t get at other camps.

  1. Evening Education Seminars
Unique to NMC, these have become very popular among the staff, many of whom are interested in teaching as a career. The topics vary each year, but have included the following in recent years:
    • How to Start a String/Band/Guitar class
    • Beginning Strings for WW/Brass/Percussion
    • Beginning WW/Brass for Strings
    • Getting a Music Theatre program started
    • Listening classes in the classroom
    • Curriculum updates and what they mean for teachers
    • Classroom Management
    • Interviewing for a Job
    • Fitness and Posture Awareness
    • Conducting a Band/String/Guitar rehearsal
    • Teaching Improvisation
    • A Blow by Blow Introduction to Percussion
  2. The Staff Scholarship Fund
This program is unique among music camps and we are excited and proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. In 1995 we established the Staff Scholarship Fund to assist campers who, due to financial constraints, would not have the opportunity to come to camp. Each year we provide from 25% to 100% of the camp fee. Administered entirely by staff volunteers, we have raised over $80 000 and we have funded more than 100 campers. Several of our recipients have been able to go on to study music and return to camp as staff members.
Monies for the Fund are raised through activities at camp (Personal Assistant for a Day, Pie in the Face Auction, Songagrams, for example) created and run by the staff, by voluntary faculty and staff donations from their camp honorarium (several staff donate all of their honorarium) and by donations received at our Tea and Symphony concerts.
In 2005 we began Project Pocket Change. Numerous staff put their pocket change aside for a period of time and donate that to the fund. Another staff person, who couldn’t make camp, knitted up a storm and donated hats and scarves which were sold at camp. Faculty who have CDs also donate a portion of their sales to the Fund.
  3. Cafe Haus and Cabaret
Two of our most popular staff/faculty evening programmes highlight the talents of our staff and faculty. From Bach to Boogie and everything in between, it’s a highly anticipated and photographed evening. Add to that our special snacks...
If you are energetic, positive and highly skilled in your instrument, we look forward to your application. Please note that applicants must read the staff description first!
